From speech to text

Jain tradition holds that after attaining omniscience a Tirthankara's teaching flows as divya dhvani, a divine sound understood by every listener. The chief disciples (ganadharas) arranged it into scripture. For Bhagwan Mahavir's teaching this was done by Gautam Swami and the other ganadharas, and their arrangement is called dvadashanga, the "twelve limbs". For centuries it was passed on by memory from teacher to pupil, which is why texts are called shruta, "that which is heard".

Famines and the passing of generations made memory fragile. The two traditions responded differently, and this is one of the main reasons their scriptures differ today.

The Shwetambar Agamas

Shwetambar monks held councils (vachana) to recite and fix the texts: at Pataliputra, then at Mathura and Valabhi, and finally at Valabhi in Gujarat in the 5th century CE under Devarddhigani Kshamashramana, where the Agamas were written down. They are in Ardhamagadhi Prakrit. The twelfth Anga, the Drishtivada, is held to have been lost.

  • 11 Angas, including the Acharanga (conduct of monks, among the oldest Jain texts), the Sutrakritanga and the Bhagavati Sutra.
  • 12 Upangas, Chedasutras (monastic discipline), Mulasutras such as the Uttaradhyayana and Dasavaikalika, and other texts.
  • Murtipujak Shwetambars accept 45 Agamas; Sthanakvasi and Terapanthi Shwetambars accept 32.
  • The Kalpasutra, telling the lives of the Tirthankaras, is read aloud during Paryushan and is often beautifully illustrated.

The great Digambar texts

Digambar tradition holds that the original Angas were gradually lost. But fragments survived in the memory of Acharya Dharasena at Girnar, who taught them to Acharyas Pushpadanta and Bhutabali. They composed the Shatkhandagam ("scripture in six parts"), among the first Digambar scriptures to be written down, in Shauraseni Prakrit. The day it was completed is celebrated as Shrut Panchami. Acharya Gunadhara composed the Kashaypahud. In the 9th century Acharyas Virasena and Jinasena wrote the vast Dhavala and Jayadhavala commentaries, preserved for centuries on palm leaf at Moodbidri in Karnataka.

These palm-leaf texts were edited and translated into Hindi in the 20th century, with Pt. Phoolchandra Shastri among the principal scholars of the work, carried out over several decades.

Acharya Kundakund

Acharya Kundakund is the most revered teacher of the Digambar tradition; his name is recited right after Bhagwan Mahavir and Gautam Ganadhar in the auspicious verse "Mangalam Bhagavan Viro". His Prakrit works Samayasara, Pravachanasara, Niyamasara, Panchastikaya and the Ashtapahud focus on the pure nature of the soul.

The Tattvartha Sutra

Written in Sanskrit by Acharya Umaswami (Umasvati), the Tattvartha Sutra sets out the whole of Jain philosophy in ten short chapters of aphorisms: the path of liberation, the soul, the universe, karma, vows, stopping and shedding karma, and moksha. It is the one text accepted by all Jain traditions, and many families recite it during Paryushan and Das Lakshan. Its first sutra gives the whole path in a line: samyag-darshana-gyana-charitrani moksha-margah.

Saman Suttam: one book for all traditions

In 1974, the year of Bhagwan Mahavir's 2500th Nirvana Mahotsav, Acharya Vinoba Bhave encouraged the community to prepare a single book of essential teachings that every Jain tradition could accept. Kshullak Jinendra Varni compiled 756 Prakrit verses from the scriptures into 44 chapters; an assembly of monks and scholars from all traditions approved it on 12 December 1974. It is the best single starting point for anyone who wants to read the teachings themselves.

Prakrit: a classical language of India

Bhagwan Mahavir taught in the people's language, not in Sanskrit. That is why the Jain scriptures are in Prakrit: Ardhamagadhi for the Shwetambar Agamas, Shauraseni for the Digambar texts, and later Apabhramsha for much Jain poetry. On 3 October 2024 the Union Cabinet granted Prakrit the status of a classical language of India, along with Pali, Marathi, Assamese and Bengali. The Ministry of Culture's note records that the foundational texts of the Jain and Buddhist traditions were written in Prakrit languages.

Prof. Rajaram Jain, awarded the Padma Shri in 2024 for literature and education, spent his life on this heritage: critical editions of the Apabhramsha poet Raidhu, and studies such as A Short History of Shauraseni Prakrit Language and Literature and Prakrit Bhasha evam Shraman Sanskriti ki Vyapakta.

A Short History of Shauraseni Prakrit Language and Literature

Manuscripts and gyan bhandars

Copying and protecting scripture is itself an act of merit in Jain tradition. Temple libraries called gyan bhandars, such as those at Jaisalmer, Patan and Moodbidri, preserved palm-leaf and paper manuscripts for centuries, including many non-Jain works. The Ministry of Culture's National Mission for Manuscripts documents and conserves this heritage, and the Indian Culture portal makes digitised Jain manuscripts and paintings available to everyone.
