After Bhagwan Mahavir's nirvana, his teaching was carried forward by a long line of monks, scholars and poets. This timeline introduces some of the best-loved acharyas of both Digambar and Shwetambar traditions, and what each gave to the Jain world.

  • An acharya is the head of a monastic order: a teacher who lives the five great vows and guides monks, nuns and lay followers.
  • Mahavir's teaching was first passed on by word of mouth through his chief disciples, the ganadharas, beginning with Gautam Swami and Sudharma Swami.
  • Kundakunda, Umaswami, Haribhadra and Hemachandra wrote works on philosophy, ethics, logic and grammar that are still studied today.
  • In modern times, Shrimad Rajchandra guided the young Gandhi, Acharya Tulsi began the Anuvrat movement, and Acharya Vidyasagar inspired a nationwide revival.

Who is an acharya?

The Navkar Mantra bows to five kinds of supreme beings, and the third of these is the acharya. An acharya is a monk who leads an order: he practises the path himself, gives diksha to new monks and nuns, and keeps the community true to the teaching. Many acharyas were also great authors. Because the Agamas were memorised and recited for centuries before they were written down, Jain history is often told as a line of teachers, each passing what he received to the next.

Dates for early acharyas are traditional or approximate, and scholars often disagree. Where a date is uncertain, it is marked "c." (circa).

The first disciples

  1. c. 6th–5th century BCEGautam Swami (Indrabhuti)

A learned Brahmin scholar who came to debate Mahavir and instead became his first and chief disciple (ganadhara). Many teachings in the Agamas are framed as answers to Gautam's questions. Jain tradition holds that he attained omniscience on the very night of Mahavir's nirvana, which is one reason Diwali is sacred to Jains.

  2. c. 5th century BCESudharma Swami

Another of the eleven ganadharas. In the Shwetambar tradition the Agamas as preserved today are understood to have come down through Sudharma, who often begins a teaching by telling his disciple what he heard from the Lord. Both traditions place him in the line of leaders after Mahavir.

  3. c. 5th century BCEJambu Swami

The disciple of Sudharma. Tradition tells that he renounced the world as a young man on the night after his wedding, inspiring his new wives and even a band of thieves to follow. He is remembered as the last person of this age to attain omniscience.

The age of the great teachers

  1. c. 4th–3rd century BCEBhadrabahu and Chandragupta Maurya

Bhadrabahu is honoured as the last shrutakevali, one who knew the entire scripture. Digambar tradition holds that, foreseeing a twelve-year famine in the north, he led a large group of monks south to Shravanabelagola in Karnataka, and that the emperor Chandragupta Maurya renounced his throne and followed him as a disciple. The smaller hill there is called Chandragiri in his memory. Shwetambar tradition gives a different account of Bhadrabahu's last years and credits him with the Kalpasutra.

  2. c. 4th–3rd century BCESthulabhadra

Honoured in the Shwetambar tradition, Sthulabhadra studied the ancient texts under Bhadrabahu and is associated with the first effort, at Pataliputra, to gather and recite the Agamas after the famine. He is also loved for a story of self-mastery: he spent a rainy season in the house of the dancer Kosha, who had once been dear to him, without breaking his vows, and she too turned to dharma. His name is recalled with Mahavir and Gautam in an auspicious Shwetambar verse.

  3. c. early centuries CEKundakunda

The most revered acharya of the Digambar tradition, whose name is recalled in prayer right after Mahavir and Gautam. His Prakrit works, the Samayasara, Pravachanasara, Niyamasara and Panchastikaya, turn the reader inward to the pure nature of the soul. His exact dates are debated.

  4. c. early centuries CEUmaswami (Umasvati)

Author of the Tattvartha Sutra, the first great Jain text in Sanskrit, which sums up the whole path in brief aphorisms. It is the one text accepted by Digambar, Shwetambar and other Jain traditions alike. See Philosophy for its seven tattvas.

  5. c. early centuries CESamantabhadra

A Digambar philosopher and poet whose Aptamimamsa defends the Jain view of anekanta with careful logic, and whose Ratnakaranda Shravakachara is a much-used guide to the conduct of householders.

  6. c. 5th century CESiddhasena Divakara

A pioneering Jain logician, honoured especially by Shwetambars. His Sanmati Tarka in Prakrit explores the standpoints (naya) from which truth can be seen, and the Nyayavatara is counted among the first Jain works on logic.

  7. c. 5th–6th century CEPujyapada (Devanandi)

A Digambar acharya who wrote the Sarvarthasiddhi, a major commentary on the Tattvartha Sutra, as well as a Sanskrit grammar and short meditative works such as the Ishtopadesha and Samadhitantra.

  8. c. 8th century CEHaribhadra Suri

Born a Brahmin scholar, he became one of the most prolific Shwetambar authors. His Shaddarshana Samuccaya presents the main Indian philosophical schools fairly and side by side, and his writings on yoga place Jain meditation in dialogue with other traditions.

  9. c. 9th century CEVirasena and Jinasena

Working in the Rashtrakuta kingdom of the Deccan, Virasena wrote the vast Dhavala commentary on the Shatkhandagam, the oldest Digambar scripture on karma, and began the Jayadhavala. His disciple Jinasena completed it and also composed the Adipurana, the life of Bhagwan Rishabhdev.

Scholars, kings and poets

  1. 12th century CEHemachandra

A Shwetambar acharya of Gujarat, honoured with the title Kalikala Sarvajna, "the all-knowing of this dark age". At the request of King Siddharaja Jayasimha he wrote the grammar Siddha-Hema-Shabdanushasana, which covers Sanskrit and Prakrit. His influence on King Kumarapala led the ruler to promote non-violence in his kingdom. He also wrote the Trishashti Shalaka Purusha Charitra on the lives of the 63 illustrious persons, and the Yogashastra.

Not a monk but a merchant-poet of Agra, Banarasidas is included here for his lasting influence. His Ardhakathanak ("Half a Story") is counted among the earliest autobiographies in a north Indian language, honest about his own failings. His Samaysar Natak brought Kundakunda's teaching to ordinary readers in verse.

Modern times

  1. 1867–1901Shrimad Rajchandraश्रीमद राजचंद्र

A Gujarati jeweller and spiritual seeker, also a lay figure rather than a monk, whose short life produced the Atmasiddhi Shastra, a verse work on the soul. The young Mohandas Gandhi met him in Bombay after returning from London, and they corresponded during Gandhi's years in South Africa. Gandhi later spoke of him with deep respect and named him among the strongest influences on his life.

For centuries, fully initiated Digambar munis had become rare, especially in north India. Acharya Shantisagar, born in Karnataka, renewed this tradition in the 20th century, travelling widely and giving diksha to many. He is honoured as Charitra Chakravarti, and today's Digambar muni sanghs largely trace their revival to him.

The ninth acharya of the Shwetambar Terapanth order. In 1949 he launched the Anuvrat movement, which invites people of every faith to take small, practical vows of honesty, non-violence and self-restraint. He walked across India and wrote many books, and during his lifetime handed over leadership of the order to his successor.

Acharya Tulsi's successor, a philosopher and prolific author of hundreds of books in several languages. He developed Preksha Dhyana, a Jain-based method of meditation, carried the Anuvrat message forward, and co-authored a book with Dr APJ Abdul Kalam.

Born in Karnataka, he became one of the most widely revered Digambar acharyas of our time and initiated a very large number of munis and aryikas. A gifted poet, he wrote the Hindi epic Mook Maati ("Silent Earth"), in which humble clay becomes a vessel through patient refinement, a picture of the soul's journey. His followers set up initiatives in handloom weaving, girls' education and healthcare. He attained samadhi on 18 February 2024 at Chandragiri, Dongargarh, Chhattisgarh, and the Prime Minister described his passing as an irreparable loss to the nation.

Why the acharyas matter today

Without this unbroken chain of teachers, Mahavir's words would not have reached us. The acharyas memorised, explained and wrote down the teaching; they adapted its language from Prakrit to Sanskrit, Kannada, Gujarati and Hindi so each generation could understand it; and they lived it in a way that made it believable. Their works also enriched Indian learning as a whole, in logic, grammar, poetry and history.
