Shri Sammed Shikharji, Jharkhand

Twenty Tirthankaras, including Bhagwan Munisuvratnath and Bhagwan Parshvanath, attained nirvana on this hill, which is why it is called the king of tirths (tirthraj). Pilgrims walk a circuit of about 27 km in a single day, visiting the tonks (shrines) that mark each nirvana spot. The hill is also known as Parasnath, after Bhagwan Parshvanath.

How to make a yatra

  • Go with bhav (devotion): a yatra is for the soul, not sightseeing. Many pilgrims recite the Navkar Mantra while walking.
  • Keep the discipline: pilgrims often eat simple food once or twice a day, before sunset, and climb hills barefoot or in cloth footwear.
  • Respect the place: no leather inside temples, modest dress, silence in the sanctum, and no littering on sacred hills.
  • Plan for the season: hill tirths such as Shikharji, Girnar and Palitana are best visited in the cooler months; Palitana's main hill is traditionally closed to pilgrims during the monsoon months.
