For more than two thousand years, Jain communities have expressed their devotion through caves carved into hills, temples of shining marble and finely painted manuscripts. This page walks through the great sites and explains the meaning behind the forms you will see in any Jain temple.
Jain art has one central subject: the soul that has conquered itself. A Tirthankara image is shown in deep meditation, either seated in the lotus posture or standing upright with arms hanging straight down (kayotsarga). The face is calm and the eyes are lowered or gazing inward. The image is not a god granting favours; it is a mirror of what every soul can become. Devotees who built caves and temples, and patrons who paid for manuscripts to be copied, saw these acts as a way to support the teaching and earn merit.
On twin hills near Bhubaneswar, small chambers were cut into the rock as retreats for Jain monks, generally dated to around the 2nd–1st century BCE. They are linked to King Kharavela of Kalinga. His long Hathigumpha ("elephant cave") inscription on Udayagiri opens with a salutation to the Arhats and the Siddhas, words that echo the opening of the Navkar Mantra. It is one of the most important early records of royal support for the Jain faith. The two-storeyed Rani Gumpha is admired for its lively friezes.

The five Jain caves (numbers 30 to 34) at the northern end were the last to be excavated, from around the 9th century, and belong to the Digambar tradition. The finest is Indra Sabha (cave 32), a two-storeyed cave with a courtyard holding a shrine carved from the living rock and a tall pillar. Its halls have sculptures of Tirthankaras, of Bahubali standing in meditation with creepers twining around his limbs, and of guardian deities. Traces of painting survive on the ceilings.

Several are colossal standing figures, the tallest an image of Bhagwan Adinath. Seen from the road below, they turn the hill itself into a temple.

Vimal Vasahi, dedicated to Bhagwan Adinath, was built in the 11th century by Vimal Shah, a minister of the Chaulukya king of Gujarat. Luna Vasahi, dedicated to Bhagwan Neminath, was built in the 13th century by the minister brothers Vastupal and Tejpal. The domed ceilings, carved in rings of figures and lotus pendants, are so fine that the marble seems almost translucent.
Built in the 15th century by the merchant Dharna Shah on land granted by Rana Kumbha of Mewar, the Ranakpur temple is dedicated to Bhagwan Adinath. It is a chaumukh temple: the main shrine holds a four-faced image and opens to all four directions. Light falls through a forest of pillars, traditionally counted as 1,444, and it is said that no two are carved alike.
Khajuraho, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built under the Chandella kings, has both Hindu and Jain temples. The Jain temples stand in the eastern group, and several are still in active worship. The largest, the Parshvanath temple of the 10th century, is celebrated for the grace of its wall sculptures.

On Vindhyagiri hill in Karnataka stands the statue of Bahubali, son of Bhagwan Rishabhdev, carved from a single block of granite about 17 metres (57 feet) high. It was commissioned around 983 CE by Chavundaraya, a minister and general of the Western Ganga dynasty. Bahubali stands in kayotsarga, so still in meditation that vines climb his legs and arms. Roughly every twelve years the Mahamastakabhisheka is held, when the image is anointed from above with water, milk, saffron and other offerings before vast gatherings.
Many forms in a Jain temple recall the samavasarana, the divine assembly hall where, Jain tradition holds, a Tirthankara preaches after attaining omniscience, with gods, humans and animals all listening in peace.
Jain communities kept great libraries (gyan bhandar), and copying sacred texts was itself an act of devotion. The most often illustrated text is the Kalpasutra, which tells the lives of the Tirthankaras, above all Bhagwan Mahavir, and is read aloud in Shwetambar communities during Paryushan. Its paintings, first on palm leaf and later on paper, belong to the western Indian style of Gujarat and Rajasthan: flat red or blue backgrounds, rich gold, crisp outlines, and faces in profile with the far eye shown projecting beyond the cheek.
Photo: LACMA, CC0, via Wikimedia CommonsDuring the 2500th Nirvana Mahotsav of Bhagwan Mahavir (1974–75), all Jain traditions agreed on a shared Jain emblem (Jain prateek). Its outline is the shape of the loka (see Jain cosmology). Near the top, a small crescent stands for Siddhashila, with three dots below it for the Three Jewels and a swastika for the four destinies. Lower down, an open palm with the wheel of dharma on it means "do not fear" and stands for ahimsa; the word "ahimsa" is written on the wheel. Beneath runs the motto from the Tattvartha Sutra, Parasparopagraho Jivanam: living beings support one another.
The Jain flag has five horizontal bands, one for each of the five supreme beings honoured in the Navkar Mantra: white for the Arihants, red for the Siddhas, yellow for the Acharyas, green for the Upadhyayas and dark blue or black for the Sadhus. A swastika sits at the centre.
