From the daughters of Bhagwan Rishabhdev to the thousands of sadhvis walking India's roads today, women have carried Jain teaching through every age. This page introduces their place in the sangh, the great women remembered in tradition, and the questions on which the two main traditions differ.
Jain tradition holds that every Tirthankara, after attaining omniscience, establishes a tirtha, a "ford" across the ocean of rebirth. That ford is the fourfold community (chaturvidh sangh): sadhus (monks), sadhvis (nuns, called aryika in the Digambar tradition), shravaks (laymen) and shravikas (laywomen). From the very beginning, then, women are not an afterthought in Jain religious life: they make up two of the four parts of the sangh, one renouncing and one householding.
The Kalpasutra, read aloud every year during Paryushan in Shwetambar temples, gives the size of Bhagwan Mahavir's community: 14,000 monks, 36,000 nuns, 159,000 laymen and 318,000 laywomen. Whatever one makes of the exact figures, the text itself remembers women as the larger part of the sangh, both among renunciants and among householders.
Photo: Public domain, via Wikimedia CommonsJain tradition remembers Bhagwan Rishabhdev, the first Tirthankara, as the one who taught humanity the arts of civilised life before he renounced the world. Among his children were two daughters, Brahmi and Sundari. Tradition holds that he taught Brahmi the art of writing, and that the ancient Brahmi script carries her name; Sundari was taught numbers and arithmetic. In this telling, the very foundations of learning, letters and numbers, were first given to two girls.
Both sisters later took diksha and became nuns, choosing the path of renunciation over marriage. A well-loved Shwetambar story tells how they went to their brother Bahubali, who stood in deep meditation yet could not reach omniscience, and gently told him to "come down from the elephant", meaning the elephant of pride. Hearing them, he let go of his last trace of ego. Whatever its version, the story shows sisters as spiritual guides, not only as family.
During his years of silent austerity, Bhagwan Mahavir took a difficult private resolve (abhigraha) about the conditions under which he would accept food, and for months no household could meet it. Tradition tells that it was finally fulfilled by Chandanbala, a princess who had lost her family in war and been sold into servitude. Mistreated, her head shaved and her feet chained, she offered him a simple meal of boiled lentils from a winnowing basket, with tears in her eyes. Mahavir accepted, and her suffering was turned to honour.
After Mahavir attained omniscience, Chandanbala became his first woman disciple and the head of the community of nuns. Both traditions honour her as the leader of the sadhvis or aryikas of his sangh. Her story is told to children as a lesson that no circumstance, however low, closes the path of dharma.
Photo: Honolulu Museum of Art, CC0, via Wikimedia CommonsRajul, also called Rajimati, was to marry Neminath, the 22nd Tirthankara. On the way to the wedding he heard the cries of animals penned up to be killed for the feast. Moved by their suffering, he had them freed, turned back, and soon renounced the world on Mount Girnar. Rajul did not choose another husband. She followed him onto the path of renunciation and became a nun. The Uttaradhyayana Sutra, a Shwetambar scripture, also tells how she firmly recalled a wavering monk, Rathanemi, to his vows, a sign of her own spiritual strength. Rajul's longing and resolve are a favourite theme of Jain devotional songs in many Indian languages.
On one important question the two main Jain traditions give different answers, and each holds its view with reverence and reasons drawn from its own texts.
|---|---|---|
| Can a woman attain moksha in this life? | Yes. Right faith, knowledge and conduct are open to all; Marudevi, mother of Rishabhdev, is honoured as the first soul of this era to be liberated. | Not in a female body. Complete non-possession, including giving up all clothing, is held necessary for the final stage, and nuns keep one white garment. A devoted aryika is expected to reach liberation in a later birth. |
| Mallinath, the 19th Tirthankara | Was a woman, Princess Malli of Mithila, who became a Tirthankara. | Was a man, like all Tirthankaras. |
| Status of nuns | Sadhvis take the same five great vows as monks. | Aryikas are deeply revered and keep the highest vows possible in a woman's life. |
Jain nuns live by the same core discipline as monks: non-violence, truth, not stealing, celibacy and non-possession. They walk barefoot from town to town, accept food only as alms, and stay in one place only for the four months of chaturmas. Many are respected scholars, teachers and writers, and they give discourses to large audiences.
In the Shwetambar traditions today, nuns clearly outnumber monks, continuing the pattern the Kalpasutra describes. In Digambar communities the picture is different: aryikas are fewer than munis, though their numbers have grown in recent decades.
For most Jain families, religion is learned first at home, and much of that home practice has been carried by women. The Kalpasutra itself opens the story of Mahavir's life with his mother, Queen Trishala, and the auspicious dreams she saw before his birth; mothers have been honoured in Jain memory ever since.
Photo: LACMA, CC0, via Wikimedia CommonsJain devotional literature also celebrates a group of virtuous women, the satis, among them Brahmi, Sundari, Chandanbala and Rajimati, whose names are recited in morning prayers in many Shwetambar homes. In the Digambar tradition, too, the faith and generosity of laywomen are remembered in temple histories and inscriptions.
