Who a Tirthankara is, the wheel of time in which they appear, their emblems and places of nirvana, and the five kalyanaks celebrated at every Panchkalyanak.
A Tirthankara is a soul that, through its own effort over many births, destroys the four "destructive" (ghatiya) karmas, attains Kevalgyan (omniscience), and then teaches the path of liberation to all beings. By teaching, the Tirthankara founds the fourfold sangh (tirtha) of monks, nuns, laymen and laywomen: hence "ford-maker".
Tirthankaras are not gods who create or grant favours. Jains revere them as perfected human beings whose life shows that every soul can reach the same state. Their images are focuses of meditation on qualities: detachment, peace and omniscience.
Jain cosmology sees time as a beginningless wheel with two halves: utsarpini (rising, when happiness, lifespan and stature increase) and avasarpini (declining). Each half has six eras (aras). In each half-cycle, 24 Tirthankaras appear in our region of the world, Bharat Kshetra. We now live in the fifth era of the current avasarpini, called Dukhama or Pancham Kaal; the 24 Tirthankaras of this half-cycle appeared in the third and fourth eras.
Tap a segment. The right half (avasarpini) declines from 1 to 6; the left half (utsarpini) rises from 6 back to 1. The highlighted segment is our age.
Each Tirthankara has an emblem (lanchhan) carved on the pedestal of the murti. Since all Jin images share the same calm meditative form, the lanchhan is how a devotee recognises which Tirthankara is shown. Where the two traditions use different emblems, both are given.
Tap any Tirthankara to see emblem, colour, birthplace and place of nirvana. Birthplaces follow common tradition; complexion colours as generally shown in Jain art (traditions differ on a few).
Twenty of the 24 attained nirvana on Shri Sammed Shikharji (Parasnath hill, Jharkhand), which is why it is the holiest of tirths. The other four: Bhagwan Rishabhdev at Ashtapad, Bhagwan Vasupujya at Champapuri (Bihar), Bhagwan Neminath at Girnar (Gujarat) and Bhagwan Mahavir at Pawapuri (Bihar).

"Kalyanak" means an auspicious event that brings welfare to the whole world. Every Tirthankara's life has five. A Panchkalyanak Pratishtha Mahotsav, like the one at Ashtapad Tirth from 29 November to 4 December 2026, re-enacts all five over several days; through these rites, new Jin images are consecrated and become worthy of worship.

Jain tradition credits him with teaching people the three means of livelihood: asi (defence), masi (writing and accounts) and krishi (farming), along with crafts and the arts. His sons included Bharat, the first Chakravarti, after whom tradition says Bharatvarsha is named, and Bahubali, whose 57 ft monolith at Shravanabelagola (Karnataka, c. 983 CE) is one of the largest free-standing statues in the world.
After a year-long fast, his first meal was sugarcane juice offered by King Shreyans: this day is remembered as Akshaya Tritiya. He attained nirvana on Mount Ashtapad, which the temple at Gurugram commemorates.

The Statue of Purity will be a 151 ft Ashtadhatu image of Bhagwan Munisuvratnath. Tradition describes him as dark in complexion (shyam varna), born in the Harivansh lineage, with the tortoise as his emblem. He attained nirvana at Shri Sammed Shikharji. Jain Ramayana traditions place the lives of Shri Ram, Lakshman and Sita within his tirth period, which gives him a special place of affection for many devotees.
The tortoise is a fitting symbol: just as it draws its limbs inward, the seeker withdraws the senses from outer objects and turns toward the self.
Jain tradition makes Neminath a cousin of Shri Krishna. On the way to his wedding with Rajul (Rajimati), he heard the cries of animals penned for the feast. Moved by their suffering, he turned back and took diksha; Rajul later became a nun. He attained nirvana on Girnar in Gujarat. The story remains one of the most powerful lessons in ahimsa.

Born in Varanasi, Bhagwan Parshvanath is widely accepted by historians as a historical teacher who lived about 250 years before Mahavir. Tradition tells how, as a prince, he saved a pair of serpents burning inside a log in an ascetic's fire; reborn as Dharanendra and Padmavati, they later shielded him with a hood during an assault by the demigod Kamath. This is why his images carry a serpent hood. He taught a fourfold restraint (chaturyam) and attained nirvana on Sammed Shikharji, which is also called Parasnath hill after him.

At 30 he renounced the world; after twelve and a half years of silence, fasting and meditation he attained Kevalgyan on the bank of the Rijukula river. For about thirty years he walked and taught across Magadha and neighbouring lands in Ardhamagadhi, the people's language rather than Sanskrit. He added brahmacharya to Parshvanath's restraints, giving the five vows Jains keep today. His chief disciple was Gautam Swami (Indrabhuti). He attained nirvana at Pawapuri on the night of Kartik Amavasya, which Jains celebrate as Diwali.
