One of the world's oldest spiritual traditions, built on non-violence, many-sidedness and non-possession. A simple guide to how it began, what it teaches, the Digambar and Shwetambar traditions, festivals and tirths.
"Jain" comes from "Jina", meaning conqueror: a soul that has conquered inner enemies such as attachment, aversion, anger, pride, deceit and greed. Those who follow the path shown by the Jinas are called Jains.
Jain Dharma has no creator god. Every soul is bound by its own karma and can reach moksha (complete liberation) through its own effort. The path is called the "Three Jewels" (Ratnatraya): right faith, right knowledge and right conduct.
“Right faith, right knowledge and right conduct together are the path to liberation.”“सम्यग्दर्शन-ज्ञान-चारित्राणि मोक्षमार्गः।”
In Jain belief the dharma is eternal: no one created it. In every cycle of time, 24 Tirthankaras reveal it again. A "Tirthankara" is one who builds a ford (tirtha) across the ocean of worldly life.
The first Tirthankara of our age was Bhagwan Rishabhdev (Adinath), who taught humanity farming, writing and the arts. Tradition holds that he attained nirvana on Mount Ashtapad. The 23rd, Bhagwan Parshvanath, and the 24th, Bhagwan Mahavir Swami, are also well known to historians.
Bhagwan Mahavir was born in Kundagram near Vaishali (Bihar). He took diksha at 30, attained Kevalgyan (omniscience) after twelve and a half years of austerity, and attained nirvana at Pawapuri. Tradition dates his life to 599–527 BCE. The NCERT history textbook describes how his teaching spread across north India and to Gujarat, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, carried by monks and nuns who walked from place to place.
In April 2024 the Government of India marked the 2550th Nirvan Mahotsav of Bhagwan Mahavir at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, where the Prime Minister released a commemorative stamp and coin.

Jains follow two main traditions: Digambar ("sky-clad") and Shwetambar ("white-clad"). Both revere the same 24 Tirthankaras, the Three Jewels and ahimsa; they differ mainly in monastic practice, scriptures and a few beliefs.
How the division came about: tradition says a twelve-year famine struck Magadha in the 3rd century BCE. Acharya Bhadrabahu led his sangh south to Shravanabelagola, while other monks stayed in the north under Acharya Sthulabhadra. Living apart, their practices drifted, and by around the 1st century CE the two traditions had clearly separated.

Photo: Public domain, via Wikimedia CommonsIndia has about 4.5 million Jains (Census 2011), with large communities in the US, UK, Canada, Kenya, Belgium, Singapore and the Gulf. On 27 January 2014 the Government of India notified Jains as a national minority community. In October 2024 the Union Cabinet granted Prakrit, the language of the early Jain scriptures, the status of a classical language of India.
