The five vows

Every Jain vow is an expression of ahimsa. Monks and nuns take them as mahavrata (great vows), kept completely in thought, word and deed. Householders take them as anuvrata (small vows), kept as far as family and work allow.

The twelve vows of a householder

A lay Jain (shravak or shravika) may take twelve vows: the five anuvratas above, plus three gunavratas that strengthen them and four shikshavratas that train the householder toward the life of a monk. The two traditions order and name a few of them differently; the substance is shared.

Three gunavratas

  • Dig vrata: limit the directions and distances one will travel for worldly purposes.
  • Desh vrata / Bhogopabhoga parimana: narrow those limits further for a period, and limit things used once (food) and used repeatedly (clothes, vehicles).
  • Anartha-danda viramana: avoid pointless harm: idle cruelty, harmful advice, careless use of weapons or fire, and unnecessary gossip.

Four shikshavratas

  • Samayika: at least 48 minutes of equanimity and meditation.
  • Proshadhopavasa: fasting on the eighth and fourteenth days of the lunar fortnight, spent in religious activity.
  • Deshavakashika / Bhogopabhoga: daily renewal of limits (traditions place this vow differently).
  • Atithi samvibhaga: sharing food and needs with monks, nuns and guests: the root of the Jain tradition of daan.
