Ahimsa in Daily Lifeदैनिक जीवन में अहिंसा

Ahimsa, non-violence towards every living being, is the heart of Jain Dharma. This page shows how Jain families turn that ideal into small, practical choices about food, words, money and the world around them.

  • Jain tradition sees life (jiva) everywhere: in humans and animals, and also in insects, plants, water, earth, air and fire.
  • Violence begins in the mind. Careless or hostile intention (bhav-himsa) matters as much as the outward act (dravya-himsa).
  • Ahimsa shapes the plate (vegetarian food, eating before sunset, filtered water), the tongue (truthful, gentle speech) and the mind (anekanta, respect for other views).
  • It reaches into money and the environment too: honest trade, limiting possessions, giving, animal shelters and careful use of water and plants.
  • You do not have to do everything at once. Small, steady steps are the traditional way.

Why ahimsa? Life in every form

Jain teaching begins with a simple observation: every living being wants to live, and no being wants pain. Jain tradition holds that each of them has a soul (jiva) of the same nature as our own, covered by different amounts of karma. A tiny ant and a human being are therefore not different in worth, only in their present condition. Harming another being is, in the end, also harm to one's own soul, because it binds fresh karma.

Jain texts arrange living beings by the number of senses they have. This scale explains why Jain practice is so careful: the more senses a being has, the greater the harm in hurting it, but even the simplest life is not ignored.

Intention and act: bhav-himsa and dravya-himsa

Jain thinkers distinguish two sides of violence. Dravya-himsa is the physical act: an injury, a life lost. Bhav-himsa is the inner state behind it: anger, greed, pride, deceit or simple carelessness. The Tattvartha Sutra defines violence as taking life through careless or passion-driven activity, so the attitude of the mind is part of the definition itself.

"Taking life through careless activity is violence."

This has two practical results. First, a person who walks, cooks and works with real care is following ahimsa even if, despite that care, a tiny creature is harmed. Second, a person who harbours hatred or wishes harm is already committing violence, even if nothing visible happens. Ahimsa is therefore as much about watchfulness and a calm heart as about rules.

The vows and the disciplines of careful walking, speaking and handling things are explained on Vows & Conduct.

Ahimsa on the plate

Food is where most families meet ahimsa every day. Jain food is strictly vegetarian: no meat, fish or eggs. Honey and alcohol are traditionally avoided too, because they involve the destruction of many small lives. Beyond this, many Jains avoid root vegetables such as onion, garlic, potato and carrot, because pulling a plant up by the root ends its whole life and disturbs countless tiny beings in the soil.

Two more habits are widely known. Ratri-bhojan tyag, not eating after sunset, is kept because insects are hard to see at night and are drawn to light and food. Filtered water is used for drinking and cooking: water is strained through a clean cloth, and in strict households boiled. Finally, Jain etiquette asks that nothing be left on the plate. Taking only what one needs is itself a form of non-violence.

Practice varies. Some families keep all these rules every day; others keep them on festival days, during Paryushan or on fixed days of the month. The daily kitchen discipline is described further on Daily Practice.

Ahimsa in speech and thought

Words can wound as deeply as weapons. Jain ethics asks that speech be true, but also kind, measured and useful. A harsh truth spoken to hurt, gossip, mockery and angry outbursts are all treated as forms of violence. Many Jains practise moments of silence (maun) to train the tongue.

In thought, ahimsa takes the form of anekantavada, the teaching that reality has many aspects and that any single viewpoint captures only part of it. If I accept that my view may be partial, I can listen to others without contempt. For this reason anekanta is often called the non-violence of the mind: it lowers the temperature of arguments in families, workplaces and society. The philosophy behind it is explained on Jain Philosophy.

Ahimsa in business and money

Jain communities have long been known in trade, and their tradition gives clear guidance for earning well. Honest weights and measures, fair prices, keeping promises and avoiding fraud are expressions of the vows of truth and non-stealing. Traditional texts also advise householders to avoid livelihoods that cause heavy harm to living beings, such as trades in weapons, animal products or large-scale destruction of forests.

Aparigraha, non-possessiveness, is the partner of ahimsa. The more we hold on to, the more we must defend and the more we consume from the world. Householders are encouraged to set a personal limit on wealth and possessions and to give away what goes beyond it.

Giving (daan) is traditionally of four kinds: food, medicine, knowledge and fearlessness (protection of life). Out of this has grown jiv daya, care for animals. Panjrapols, shelters for old, sick and abandoned animals, are supported by Jain communities in many towns, especially in Gujarat and Rajasthan. In Old Delhi, a charitable bird hospital stands within the Digambar Lal Mandir complex at Chandni Chowk.

Ahimsa and the environment

Because Jain tradition counts water, earth, air, fire and plants as living bodies, careless use of them is not neutral. Leaving a tap running, wasting electricity, plucking leaves for no reason or burning more than needed are all small acts of harm. The Jain response is restraint: use what is necessary, reuse and repair, and consume less.

This ancient outlook fits naturally with modern concern for the planet. A household that wastes little food, saves water, avoids needless plastic and treats trees and animals with respect is living ahimsa, whatever its religion.

Family practice and children

Children usually learn ahimsa by example long before they learn the word. In many Jain homes they see elders check the floor before sitting, gently move an insect outside instead of killing it, strain water and finish dinner before dark. Pathshalas, the religious classes for children run by many temples, add stories of the Tirthankaras and simple prayers such as the Navkar Mantra.

A gentle approach works best: explain the reason behind each habit, let children choose a small vow they can keep, and praise kindness more than strictness. The daily evening forgiveness practice, saying sorry to anyone hurt during the day, is a good place to begin.

Ahimsa and Mahatma Gandhi

Mahatma Gandhi grew up in Gujarat among Jain neighbours, and after returning from his studies in England he came to know the Jain thinker and poet Shrimad Rajchandra, whom he called Raychandbhai. Gandhi wrote that Raychandbhai was one of three modern figures who most deeply shaped his life, alongside Tolstoy and Ruskin, and that he turned to him for guidance in times of spiritual doubt. The non-violence Gandhi carried into public life thus has one of its roots in this Jain friendship.
