Jain Cosmology: The Universe (Lok)

Jain tradition describes a universe that no one created and that will never end, with souls moving through its worlds according to their karma. This page explains its shape, its regions, the turning wheel of time and why a human birth is so precious.

  • Jain tradition holds that the universe (loka) is uncreated and eternal; beyond it lies empty space (aloka).
  • The loka is often drawn as a standing human figure, with the lower, middle and upper worlds stacked from feet to head.
  • We live in Bharat Kshetra, in the southern part of Jambudvipa, the round continent at the centre of the middle world with Mount Meru at its heart.
  • Time turns in a wheel of rising and falling half-cycles, each with six aras; we are now in the fifth ara, Dukhama (Pancham Kaal).
  • Souls wander through four destinies (gatis); only from a human birth can liberation be reached, which is why it is called rare and precious.

An uncreated, eternal universe

Many traditions begin with a story of creation. Jain thought does not. Jain tradition holds that the universe has always existed and always will. No god made it, runs it or will destroy it. What we see changing around us are changes of form (paryaya) in substances that themselves are eternal, as explained on the philosophy page: souls, matter, the media of motion and rest, space and time.

Space (akasha) is infinite. The part of space in which all six substances are found is called loka, the inhabited universe. The endless space beyond it, containing nothing but space itself, is aloka. Because the medium of motion (dharma dravya) exists only within the loka, nothing, not even a liberated soul, can travel into the aloka. This idea explains where the liberated souls come to rest, as we will see below.

The shape of the loka: the cosmic person

Jain texts describe the loka as broad at the bottom, narrow in the middle, widening again above and narrowing at the very top. Painters and teachers often show it as a man standing with feet apart and hands on his hips. This figure is called the Lokapurusha, the "cosmic person". It is a teaching picture, not a being: it helps the mind hold the whole universe in a single image.

The outline of the Jain emblem, adopted by the whole community in the 2500th Nirvana year of Bhagwan Mahavir, is drawn in this same shape of the loka. You can read more about it on the art and architecture page.

The three worlds

The loka is divided into three regions, from the feet of the cosmic person to the head:

Adho Lok (lower world)अधोलोकSeven layered hell-regions (narak bhumi), each darker and more painful than the one above. Beings are born here because of heavy harmful karma, and stay only until that karma is exhausted.
Madhya Lok (middle world)मध्यलोकA vast flat disc of rings of continents and oceans, at the "waist" of the cosmic person. Humans, animals and plants live here, along with some kinds of gods.
Urdhva Lok (upper world)ऊर्ध्वलोकTier upon tier of heavens (devlok) where gods enjoy the fruit of merit. Their happiness is long but not permanent: when that merit is used up, they are reborn elsewhere.
The two traditions count the heavens a little differently: Shwetambar texts list twelve kalpa heavens and Digambar texts sixteen, with further higher heavens above them in both. The overall picture is shared.

Madhya Lok: Jambudvipa and Mount Meru

At the centre of the middle world lies Jambudvipa, a round continent named after the jambu (rose-apple) tree. Around it, like ripples in a pond, ring after ring of oceans and continents spread outward, each twice as wide as the one before, in countless numbers. At the exact centre of Jambudvipa rises Mount Meru (Sumeru), the axis of the world. Jain tradition holds that when a Tirthankara is born, the gods carry the infant to Meru for the first sacred bathing (janma abhishek), a scene still re-enacted in temples.

Humans live only in the inner part of the middle world, called Manushya Lok, the human world: Jambudvipa, the next continent Dhatakikhanda, and the inner half of the third, Pushkaravara. This is often called the "two and a half continents" (adhai dvip).

Bharat Kshetra: our region

Mountain ranges running east to west divide Jambudvipa into regions. The southernmost is Bharat Kshetra, where we live; the northernmost, its mirror, is Airavat Kshetra; and in the middle, on either side of Meru, lies Mahavideha Kshetra. Bharat and Airavat pass through the rising and falling wheel of time described below. Mahavideha does not: there, Jain tradition holds, conditions are always suitable for liberation, and Tirthankaras are present at all times. Many Jains remember Simandhar Swami, believed to be teaching in Mahavideha now.

Siddhashila: the summit of the universe

At the very top of the loka, above all the heavens, is Siddhashila, often drawn as a crescent. When a soul sheds every last karma, it rises naturally upward, the way a gourd coated in clay rises to the surface once the clay washes off. It stops at the edge of the loka, because beyond it there is no medium of motion. There the liberated souls, the Siddhas, dwell for ever in infinite knowledge, perception, bliss and energy, never to be reborn. This is why the crescent with a dot above it appears over the swastika in many Jain symbols, and why Siddhas are honoured in the second line of the Navkar Mantra.

The wheel of time (kalachakra)

Just as space has no edge to its emptiness, time has no beginning. In Bharat and Airavat, time turns like a wheel in two half-cycles. In the utsarpini (rising) half, happiness, strength, lifespan and goodness gradually increase; in the avasarpini (falling) half, they gradually decrease. Each half has six spokes or eras, called aras. The present half-cycle is an avasarpini.

Character (in the falling half)स्वरूप (अवसर्पिणी में)
1Sushama-SushamaExtreme happiness; wishing-trees (kalpavriksha) meet every need.
2SushamaHappiness, slightly less than before.
3Sushama-DushamaHappiness mixed with some sorrow. Near its end, Bhagwan Rishabhdev teaches people farming, crafts and social order.
4Dushama-SushamaSorrow mixed with happiness: the age of the Tirthankaras, from Bhagwan Rishabhdev's ministry to Bhagwan Mahavir's nirvana.
5Dushama (Pancham Kaal)Sorrow predominates. This is our age. No one born here attains liberation in that same life, yet dharma can be practised and spiritual progress made.
6Dushama-DushamaExtreme sorrow and decline, after which the rising half begins.

In the rising half the same six aras follow in reverse order. Jain tradition holds that twenty-four Tirthankaras appear in every such half-cycle; for the present one, see the page on the 24 Tirthankaras. The teaching of Pancham Kaal is not meant to discourage: it reminds us that the path is harder now, so every sincere step counts.

The four destinies (gati) and the precious human birth

A soul still bound by karma is reborn again and again in one of four destinies (gati). The four arms of the Jain swastika stand for them.

Heavenly beings: great comfort, but little urge to renounce.
Human beings: a balance of joy and sorrow, with the ability to take full vows.
Animals, birds, insects, plants and the tiny one-sensed beings.
Beings of the lower world, suffering the results of grave harm done.

Of these four, only the human state allows a soul to take up complete self-restraint and destroy all karma. Gods have too much pleasure, hell beings too much pain, and most animals lack the capacity to take vows. That is why Jain teachers call a human birth rare and precious, and urge us not to waste it. The Uttaradhyayana Sutra (chapter 3) names four rare things: a human birth, hearing the true teaching, faith in it, and the energy to practise self-restraint.

Why this picture matters

Jain cosmology is not only a map; it is a teaching about responsibility. If no one created the world and no one judges us, then our own actions shape where the soul goes next. Seeing the vastness of the loka and the long cycles of time helps us hold our worries lightly, treat every living being as a fellow traveller, and use this human life well. Meditating on the shape of the universe (loka bhavana) is one of the twelve reflections (anupreksha) that Jain practice recommends.
