Is Jainism a separate religion?

Yes. Jain Dharma has its own teachers, scriptures, philosophy, monastic orders, temples and festivals, and it developed independently alongside the other Indian traditions. The Government of India notified Jains as a minority community at the national level on 27 January 2014, under the National Commission for Minorities Act, 1992. Jains are now one of the six officially recognised minority communities in India. For a fuller introduction, see Introduction.

Do Jains believe in God?

Jain tradition does not accept a God who created or controls the universe; it holds that the universe is beginningless and runs by its own laws, including the law of karma. What Jains worship is the perfected soul: the Tirthankaras and Siddhas, who have become free of all karma and attained infinite knowledge and bliss. They are honoured as ideals to follow, not as givers of favours. In this sense every soul is a potential paramatma, a supreme soul.

Who is a Tirthankara?

A Tirthankara is a "ford-maker": a person who crosses the ocean of birth and death, attains omniscience (kevala jnana) and then teaches others how to cross. Each Tirthankara re-establishes the fourfold community of monks, nuns, laymen and laywomen. Jain tradition holds that 24 Tirthankaras appear in each half of the time cycle; in our age the first was Rishabhdev and the last was Mahavir. Read more on The 24 Tirthankaras.

Is Jainism older than Mahavir?

Yes. Mahavir, who lived in the 6th–5th century BCE, is the 24th Tirthankara, not the founder. Jain tradition regards the teaching as eternal, renewed by each Tirthankara, beginning in our age with Rishabhdev. Historians widely accept that the 23rd Tirthankara, Parshvanath, was a historical teacher who lived about 250 years before Mahavir, and that Mahavir's parents followed his tradition.

What is the difference between Digambar and Shwetambar?

These are the two main traditions of Jain Dharma, and they share the same core beliefs, vows and Tirthankaras. Digambar ("sky-clad") monks renounce all clothing, while Shwetambar ("white-clad") monks and nuns wear simple white garments. They also differ on some points of history and scripture: Shwetambars preserve the Agam texts as their canon, while Digambars hold that the original Agams were gradually lost and rely on texts by later acharyas. They also differ on whether a woman can attain liberation in the same life. Both are respected parts of one family; each has further sub-traditions.

What is the Navkar Mantra?

The Navkar or Namokar Mantra is the most important Jain prayer, recited by all Jain traditions. It bows to five kinds of worthy beings: the Arihants, the Siddhas, the Acharyas, the Upadhyayas and all Sadhus. It names no individual person and asks for nothing; it honours qualities, not personalities. The full text and meaning are on Navkar Mantra.

Why don't many Jains eat onion, garlic or potato?

These are root vegetables (kandmool). Pulling them out of the ground ends the life of the whole plant, and Jain texts teach that roots and tubers hold countless tiny lives, and also disturb many small creatures in the soil. Avoiding them reduces harm as far as possible. Not every Jain follows this rule every day, but it is widely kept, especially on festival days and during Paryushan. See Ahimsa in Daily Life.

Why no food after sunset?

After dark, tiny insects cannot be seen and are drawn to lamps and food, so cooking and eating at night risks harming them. For this reason Jain tradition values ratri-bhojan tyag, finishing the last meal before sunset. Some keep it strictly, giving up even water at night; others keep it on chosen days. Families also find it a healthy, disciplined rhythm.

What is Paryushan, and what does "Micchami Dukkadam" mean?

Paryushan is the most important Jain festival, a time of fasting, scripture study, prayer and self-examination, usually in the monsoon month of Bhadrapad. Shwetambars observe eight days, ending with Samvatsari; Digambars observe ten days as Das Lakshan Parva, honouring ten virtues. At the close, Jains ask forgiveness of everyone with the Prakrit phrase "Micchami Dukkadam", meaning roughly "may any wrong I have done be without effect", and they forgive others in turn. More on festivals is on Daily Practice.

Can non-Jains visit Jain temples?

Generally, yes: most Jain temples welcome respectful visitors of every faith. Common etiquette is to dress modestly, remove footwear outside, avoid leather items such as belts and bags, and not carry food or drink inside. Keep your voice low, do not touch the idols, and ask before taking photographs. Some temples have their own additional rules, so it is good to follow the notices and the guidance of temple staff.

What is a Panchkalyanak?

The five kalyanaks are the five auspicious events in the life of every Tirthankara: conception, birth, renunciation (diksha), attainment of omniscience (kevala jnana) and final liberation (nirvana or moksha). A Panchkalyanak Pratishtha Mahotsav is a festival in which these five events are re-enacted with rituals over several days to consecrate a new Jin idol before it is installed for worship. It is one of the largest and most joyful events in Jain community life.

What is the Statue of Purity?

The Statue of Purity is a planned 151-foot Jin Pratima of Bhagwan Munisuvratnath, the 20th Tirthankara, to be made of ashtadhatu (an alloy of eight metals) at Ashtapad Tirth Jain Mandir, Gurugram. A Panchkalyanak Pratishtha Mahotsav is scheduled for 29 November to 4 December 2026, and the Shilanyas (foundation-stone ceremony) for 6 December 2026. The name reflects the purpose of every Jin image: to remind the viewer of the pure, passionless state that every soul can reach.

How many Jains are there?

According to the Census of India 2011, there were about 4.5 million Jains in India, a little under half a percent of the population. The largest numbers live in Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka, with communities in Delhi and the NCR as well. Despite their small number, Jains have contributed greatly to India's art, literature, trade and charity. There are also Jain communities abroad, in East Africa, the UK, North America and elsewhere.

What is Prakrit, and why is it important?

Prakrit is a family of ancient Indian languages that were close to the speech of ordinary people. Mahavir is said to have taught in Ardhamagadhi Prakrit so that everyone could understand, and the Shwetambar Agams and many early Digambar texts, written in Shauraseni Prakrit, are in these languages. The Navkar Mantra itself is in Prakrit. In October 2024 the Government of India granted Prakrit the status of a classical language, recognising its long literary heritage.

What is moksha?

Moksha is the complete freedom of the soul from all karma and therefore from the cycle of birth and death. Jain tradition holds that the liberated soul rises to the top of the universe, the Siddhashila, and remains there for ever in its natural state of infinite knowledge, perception, bliss and energy. The path to it is the "three jewels": right faith, right knowledge and right conduct, practised together. The concepts behind this are explained on Jain Philosophy and The Jain Universe.

What is a tirth, and which are the major ones?

A tirth is a sacred place, often linked with the kalyanaks of the Tirthankaras or with great monks who attained liberation there. Among the most revered are Shri Sammed Shikharji in Jharkhand, where tradition holds that twenty of the twenty-four Tirthankaras attained nirvana; Pawapuri in Bihar, place of Mahavir's nirvana; Shatrunjaya at Palitana and Girnar in Gujarat; and Shravanabelagola in Karnataka. Visiting them on foot and with simplicity is itself a spiritual practice. See Tirths.
